Sailing in Greece

The origin of European civilisation and cradle of philosophy and mythology, Greece has a longstanding seafaring tradition and is one of the most popular sailing destinations in the Mediterranean. The Cyclades Islands, the Sporades and the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean, along with the islands in the Ionian Sea, are just some of the idyllic destinations where you can charter a boat in Greece and your adventure begins.

Athens

A visit to Athens is always a truly special experience. With its ancient roots still present in everyday life, Athens has developed into a happening modern city with sophisticated shopping and restaurants. We would recommend this area.

Be sure to spend at least a couple of days here visiting the extraordinary historical sites before setting sail on your Athens sailing vacation — a real adventure in the Saronic Gulf.

North Ionian Islands / Lefkas & Corfu

The southern Ionian has long been a favorite of sailors who know exactly where to find good sailing, incredible scenery and great fun. With the aid of superb sailing conditions relax on beautiful beaches, dine in sleepy fishing villages and explore Kefalonia, Meganissi and Ithaca – islands steeped in myth and legend. Gouvia is a modern resort town on the east coast of Corfu. Whether you’re looking for secluded beaches, delicious Corfiot cuisine or fascinating historical sites, Corfu is sure to please. The good winds, ideal sailing conditions and warm summer weather make it a perfect holiday destination.

Cyclades Islands

There are around 220 islands in the Cyclades, including the well-known islands of Santorini with its famous blue domed churches and Mykonos its party lifestyle. There are two points in which to explore the Cyclades Islands from, Mykonos and Paros. We recommend starting in Paros as it’s in the middle of the islands; an ideal starting point for a week or longer. We would recommend this area of Greece is a destination for a keener sailor; with the meltimi blowing heavily during the summer season it’s an exciting sailing ground for an experienced crew. We would recommend this area.

Sporades Islands

The Sporades Islands lie to the North of Athens, in the Aegean Sea. Amongst other things, they are famous for the regular summer meltemi winds and as the setting for the 2008 ‘Mamma Mia’ movie.

The area is also home to the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the endangered Mediterranean Monk Seal.

Saronic Islands

The Saronic Islands are a popular destination for sailors and locals alike. This wonderful area is short trip away from Athens making it really accessible. The wind in the Saronic Islands is perfect for those relatively new to chartering. There can be some exhilarating breezes but they tend to remain consistent and easy to handle. The best reason to sailing in the Saronic Islands is the tranquility and ease (even in the middle of August). This incredible area seems to have fallen off the radars of many crew which means that good quay space is common even in the height of summer.
