Spring Sailing in Italy 2019 – Sailing the Tuscan Archipelago

27th April – 4th May 2019
Location Italy: The Tuscan Archipelago and Elba

Our “Spring Sailing in Italy” week is an informal flotilla/regatta group event, with the focus on having a fabulous fun holiday, catering for skilled and novice sailors alike – a challenging and enjoyable fun experience. We will be “sailing with friends” and “cruising in company” around the Tuscan Archipelago and the island of Elba.

What is provided:

– an adventure holiday under sail in a relaxed atmosphere – a guided/planned sailing route with a supporting program of events and activities for all skippers and crew, yet still some time for your own personal/crew choice activities

– the priceless exchange of experience between “old hands” and “newcomers” – local coastal knowledge and exploration for all to enjoy and experience

– easy sailing for beginners, with opportunities for learning new skills

– fun challenge targets/races for seasoned charterers to “compete in company”

In short: it is a combination of an Italian holiday, enjoying sailing around some of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago, also participating in some casually competitive racing in a fun flotilla group!

The organisation and operation of this event will be handled by the experienced team within Sail Charter International.

Sailing the Tuscan Archipelago

– Program Outline –

Potential Passages … subject to change depending on flotilla operation and local conditions …

Day 1: Saturday 27th April – TRAVEL & ARRIVAL

Arrive during the afternoon (preferably before 18:00) and check-in to Marina Cala de’ Medici. Settle into your yacht. Enjoy the WELCOME meeting and evening event.

Click HERE for Google Map.

Day 2: Sunday 28th April.

Sail south west for 35nm to Capraia island. The port of Capraia marina has a number of bars and restaurants, and some shops. We may also try to stop at Cala della Mortola or Cala Rossa, or one of the other picturesque beautiful bays around the island.

Day 3: Monday 29th April.

Onward to Elba Island, approx 30nm. Leaving Capriaia, we sail south around the coast, then head south east to Porto Ferraio on the north east side of Elba.

Porto Ferraio – click HERE for Google Map.

This is the main port of the island and one of the most active tourist ports in Italy. Capital of the Elba, it owes its importance to the beautiful natural harbour and its rich history. Already upon arrival by boat you can admire the imposing Medici fortifications on the Bay: Forte Falcone, Forte Stella (recognizable by the lighthouse) and the Torre della Linguella at the entrance to the dock to defend against the continuous attacks of pirates through older ages. A beautiful walk from the marina leads inside the walls of the historic centre which is beautiful to explore, and on the western side, there are some beautiful white pebble beaches that highlight the clarity of the sea.

Day 4: Tuesday 30th April.

Today we follow the coast westward and continue for 18 nm towards Punta Fetovaia. Through one of the most evocative stretches of the Elba coast, we will reach Fetovaia, the promontory that looks like a rocky finger that seems to indicate the route to the south of the island’s archipelago. Here there is one of the most beautiful beaches on the island of Elba with granite sand, coarse grain, slipping away into the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Day 5: Wednesday 1st May.

Only a short distance of 10nm along the coast we will find Marina di Campo. Once we reach Marina di Campo we will find a village on the right side of the beach. In the centre is the ancient fishing village, the small port, the colourful and picturesque houses, all dominated by the Pisana tower, formerly used for sighting. The village has a beautiful promenade and is famous as an evening meeting place.

Day 6: Thursday 2nd May.

Heading north towards the mainland for 25nm, we will enter the Gulf of Baratti. Returning towards Castiglioncello an obligatory stop must be the beautiful Gulf of Baratti. The inlet is characterized by a sandy beach, more extensive in the central-northern part of the gulf, which tends to decrease considerably towards the southern end of the port of Baratti. The seabed is low, while the beach is characterized both for golden and amber colours, and for the presence of iron slag, residues of the processing of the aforementioned metal during the Etruscan period. The area is dotted with archaeological remains from the Etruscan period.

Day 7: Friday 3rd May.

Leaving the Baratti Gulf, we sail north for 22nm, returning to our base at the Marina Cala de’ Medici.

Day 8: Saturday 4th May – DEPARTURE & onward TRAVEL

Depart by 09:00.

NOTE – this “outline proposal” is subject to change depending on organisation/operational requirements
in advance of and during the event, also especially due to weather conditions during the event.
